SP: Why did Saturday have a sudden increase in the record of deaths

Brazil closed the last week, which ended on Saturday (13), with a staggering 731 recorded deaths and 14,642 new Covid-19 cases in just a single day. Adding the seven days, between 11/7 and 11/13, there were 1,834 deaths and 79,519 cases

According to data released by the National Council of Health Secretaries (Conass), only the state of São Paulo registered 519 deaths in Saturday’s count, which means 70% of the total number of records.

But the increase of 446 deaths compared to the previous day has an explanation: the damming of data in São Paulo due to technical failures in accessing the Epidemiological Surveillance Information System (Sivep) database.

With updated records, the state of São Paulo had an approximate rate of 30% of all deaths in the country in the last seven days.

Today, according to data from Conass, the country has returned to a downward trend and recorded 61 deaths and 4,119 cases

The damming of data at Sivep takes place in the same week that the Government of the State of São Paulo went public to inform that the state passed a period of 24 hours without having any deaths by Covid-19 registered.

The City Hall of São Paulo, however, contested the speech of João Doria (PSDB) and declared in a press conference last Wednesday (10) that the information was not true.

The infectologist Regina Valim, a professor at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), believes that the delay in recording notifications is something normal.

“Every time we notify a death, there are several items that have to be correctly evaluated. Cleaning the database takes a little longer and meanwhile this false impression is given”, points out the doctor.

Despite this, Valim reiterates the importance of maintaining protective measures against the spread of the virus, at least while vaccination coverage is not ideal.

Today, according to the Ministry of Health, Brazil has 59.4% of the population completely immunized.

“We still don’t have the pandemic completely under control. As you start to let go of the non-use of masks, the relaxation of preventive actions, there is a chance of having an increase”, concludes the infectologist.
