Gathered at a meeting this Wednesday morning (17), more than 200 journalists from newspapers and magazines in São Paulo (SP) received with surprise the lack of response from the employers’ Union – Sindjore to the demands of the category.
After a historic 2-hour stoppage, which brought together more than 350 professionals from the largest newsrooms in the city of São Paulo, among them Value, April, Folha de São Paulo and state, the companies did not present any counterproposal.
In reaction, the category approved a new stoppage, this time from 4 am to next Tuesday, November 23, from 2 pm to 6 pm.
For more than 5 months, journalists have been negotiating to sign the Collective Convention of Newspapers and Magazines of the Capital and are asking for a salary increase. “A category that did not stop with the pandemic and that suffered from wage cuts in the period,” recalled Thiago Tanji, president of the São Paulo State Professional Journalists Union (SJSP), during the assembly.
The category claims the staggered replacement of their salaries based on inflation for the period of 8.9% (from June 2020 to May 2021), according to INPC, with 5% being retroactive to the base date and 3.9% on the November sheet, in addition to the fine of the PLR readjusted by 8.9%.
The companies offered three adjustment ranges and the return of the PLR fine adjusted by 8.9%. For salaries of up to R$ 5 thousand, the salary adjustment would be based on inflation (8.9%), with 5% being retroactive to the base date in June and the difference in January.
On the other hand, salaries between R$ 6 thousand and R$ 7 thousand would be readjusted by 6% in two installments, 5% in June and the difference in January. Salaries above R$ 7,000 would have a fixed adjustment of R$ 420, with R$ 350 being retroactive to June and the difference to January. The payment of differences would be made in two installments: in November and December.
According to Larissa Gould, legal secretary of the SJSP, the proposal is contradictory, since it does not include the 7h floor of the category that today, based on the Collective Agreement, is R$ 5,411.28. “In practice, the proposal not to replace inflation will affect most of the category and represents a decrease in the salaries of professionals”
The Union sent a letter to the employers’ union, showing the indignation of the workers and denouncing attempts to intimidate professionals from the newspaper’s editorial office. Economic value.
“Finally, we want here to repudiate the attempts to intimidate the legitimate movement of journalists, which occurred notably in the newspaper Economic value, with the request for a list of professionals who would stop their activities on the last 10th. As we all know, the right to demonstrate is legitimate and protected by our Federal Constitution. Any attempt at harassment or pressure is also a way of attacking and harming democracy.”

Dear Mr. Reginaldo Araújo, representatives of Sindjore and managers of newspaper and magazine companies in the capital,
The more than 230 journalists present at the meeting this Wednesday (17) received with indignation and perplexity the absence of a proposal from the companies after our category formalized our demands in a communication sent to Sindjore last November 9th.
Since that date, we have been waiting for a new signal from the companies, but we only received the response that we should send a new counterproposal. We believe that, at this moment, it is the representatives of Sindjore who must formalize what they want to offer in order for us to move forward in the negotiations. By unanimous decision of the meeting, we maintain our current counterproposal and await a new position from the companies.
It’s impossible not to emphasize the fact that last November 10th, our category held a historic strike that involved more than 350 journalists from all the main companies in São Paulo. The movement had the massive participation of professionals, regardless of positions, salaries or length of service, indicating that our claims are unitary and extend to the entire category.
In this sense, we inform the companies that a new stoppage was approved, for next Tuesday (November 23). Continuing our mobilization, the demonstration period will last four hours.
However, journalists remain willing to talk and effectively move towards reaching a satisfactory agreement. Thus, we requested a new negotiation table between the Union of Journalists and Sindjore for next Friday (19th), at 3 pm. If there is a new proposal from the companies, a meeting will be immediately called to consider the matter.
Finally, here we want to repudiate the attempts to intimidate the legitimate movement of journalists, which occurred notably in the newspaper Valor Econômico, with the request for a list of professionals who would stop their activities on the last 10th. As we all know, the right to demonstrate is legitimate and protected by our Federal Constitution. Any attempt at harassment or pressure is also a way of attacking and harming democracy.
This Wednesday, we received information that the direction of Valor Econômico tries to intimidate professionals with explicit threats of dismissal if the category does not accept the current employer proposal. A clear attack on our category and on the free exercise of journalism.
We are aware that mobilization must continue until a new satisfactory proposal is presented by the companies. In this way, we will not remain silent in the face of this or any other attempt to demobilize our legitimate movement.
