President of Mexico proposes the creation of an organization

The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), proposed the creation of a new body to unify the countries of the region and replace the Organization of American States (OAS). “We must not rule out the replacement of the OAS by a truly autonomous body, one that is no one’s lackey, but a mediator of conflicts in matters of human rights and democracy”, affirmed during the 21st meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), held in Mexico City, last Saturday (24). The proposal was supported by Bolivian President Luis Arce.

In addition to debating new trade treaties and regional integration mechanisms, the event also sought to celebrate the 238 years of Libertador Simón Bolívar. A total of 31 countries participated in the meeting, sending foreign ministers, deputy ministers or special representatives.

“We need a much more unified response from our region at a difficult time like the one we’re facing,” defended the executive secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Alícia Bárcena. One of the decisions of the meeting is to increase exchange between nations so that vaccines and medicines are produced in a coordinated manner, with equitable distribution.

The 21st meeting of CELAC brought together representatives from 31 countries in Mexico City on July 24th and 25th / CELAC

“We want to build a strategy to be self-sufficient in critical situations, such as the pandemic, to create a fund to deal with natural disasters. What we can see at this meeting is the desire of our countries to seek ways of unity”, declared Bolivian Chancellor Rogélio Mayta.

Cuba and Venezuela are the two countries on the continent that stopped participating in the OAS due to the hostile position of the organization towards the Cuban socialist system and the Bolivarian revolution.

Recently, OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro was named one of the supporters of the coup d’état in Bolivia in November 2019, as well as promoting economic sanctions against Venezuelans.

At the last CELAC meeting, AMLO defended the rescue of Bolivarianism on the American continent and forging new alliances.

“It is already time for a new coexistence between all the countries of America, because the model imposed for more than two centuries is exhausted, it has no future, no way out and no longer benefits anyone”, defended López Obrador.

The Mexican president also stated that the conditions are currently in place for the purpose of mutual respect and unity to be achieved.
