The unemployment rate in Paraíba was 15.3% in the 2nd quarter of this year, with 237,000 people in this condition, according to the Quarterly National Household Sample Survey (PNAD C), released by the IBGE, this Tuesday ( 31). The indicator was above the country average (14.1%), but below that of the Northeast (18.2%)
Comparing the first three months of 2021 (15.8%) with data observed in the same period of 2020, an increase was registered. At that time, the rate was 12.8% and the number of people who were out of work.
The survey also points out that there was a drop in the average real income usual for all jobs of employed persons, in both comparisons. In the 2nd quarter of this year, the amount was R$1,744, while it was R$1,857 in the previous quarter and R$1,973, in the same period as last year.

In turn, the level of occupation in the state was 39.9%, a percentage point below that observed in the previous three months (40.9%), although it remained stable compared to the observed in the 2nd quarter of 2020 (39, 8%).
The indicator was still below the Brazilian (49.6%) and Northeastern (41.8%) averages. This information is calculated based on the number of people employed in relation to the total of those who are of working age, that is, who are 14 years old or more.

The informality rate in Paraíba was 53.6% in the 2nd quarter of this year, the 7th highest in the country and the 5th in the region, also higher than the average in Brazil (40.6%). The proportion of those who, in the population aged 14 or over, worked as a self-employed person was 34.8%, above the national average (28.3%) and the 4th highest in the country.
Underutilization of the workforce has the highest average in the country
According to the National Household Sample Survey, there was a retraction in the composite rate of underutilization of the workforce in the state, which went from 39.8% in the 1st quarter to 38.2% in the 2nd. Despite this, it was still higher than that observed in the country’s average (28.6%).
This indicator reveals that, in relation to the expanded workforce, in Paraíba, about 710 thousand people were unemployed, underemployed due to insufficient hours worked or in the potential workforce. In the same period of 2020, this amount was 783 thousand, while in the first three months of this year it was 757,000.
