Opinion | Be anti-racist! | Opinion

The conscience of black people has been awakened day after day as to their leading role in the construction of Brazil. However, it is necessary to focus on the reality that we will never be a Nation, as long as hegemonic thinking remains indifferent to the fact that the influence of peoples of African origin must be recognized, not only culturally, but in all fields of human activity.

More than 50% of the Brazilian population declares itself black or brown. This issue is much deeper than the classification of skin color. It means that more than 50% of the population, in such a way, is a potential target of repeated acts of discrimination that transit between under-literacy, police violence, exploitation of labor, and so many other aberrations that are, unfortunately, common in our society .

During the covid-19 pandemic, the racial element was also manifested: a report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) showed that blacks were 1.5 times more likely to die from the disease, despite its prevalence among whites. And even the distribution of vaccines is still very uneven: while countries in Europe and America already have more than 80% immunized, less than 10% of African nations will reach the goal of vaccinating 40% of their populations, due to the absence of immunization agents and syringes .

The designation of the date as Black Consciousness Day, unfriendly to those who remain superficial and ignorant, privileged by the state of affairs, is fundamental for the awakening of other actors on the Brazilian scene. There is no doubt that humanity in a perfect state will be the one to overcome racial issues. However, there is a lot to do.

Black-skinned people were objectified for the enrichment of a mercantilist Europe, which was made from the blood shed by enslaved human beings from Africa. To think that this is a thing of the past is to ignore the time of cultural transformations. The urgency of confronting racism is for yesterday! It is necessary to build the future by deconstructing the logic of the past.

Therefore, Black Consciousness Day, so that the Human Consciousness truly awakens! But, as it is, it’s a long way off! No matter what color your skin is: wake up! And, as Angela Davis said: in a racist society it is not enough not to be racist, it is necessary to be anti-racist. It is!
