According to a statement from the city on social networks, the process of strengthening immunization will begin in Long-Term Institutions for the Elderly (ILPIs) in the city.

According to the city, Niterói currently has 76% of the inhabitants vaccinated with at least one dose. Since Monday (23), the municipality has been vaccinating people aged 17 or over. Starting tomorrow, 16-year-olds will be included in the calendar that continues progressively until they reach 12-year-olds – the minimum age to receive the covid-19 vaccine.

new guideline

The announcement of the boost to immunization in Niterói comes shortly after the Ministry of Health informs, on Wednesday (25), that the third dose of the vaccine against covid-19 will be offered in Brazil. According to the agency, the boost will be made to all seniors over 70 years old and immunosuppressed, that is, people with cancer, HIV, transplants and with weakened immune systems, from the second half of September.

According to the guidance of the Ministry of Health, the boost is valid for anyone who took any vaccine used in the national vaccination campaign against covid-19 and will preferably be carried out with a dose of Pfizer/BioNTech. In the absence of this immunizing agent, the alternative must be made with viral vector vaccines, Janssen or Astazeneca.

In addition to strengthening the immunization, the Ministry of Health also announced the reduction of the interval between doses of Pfizer and Astrazeneca from 12 to eight weeks. The forecast is that this update will also be made from the second half of September.

The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) has requested information from vaccine manufacturers on the progress of studies on booster doses or revaccination of the immunizing agent.

Last Tuesday (24), the agency made the request to the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) and this week a meeting is scheduled with Janssen-Cilag. Last week, the agency held a meeting with Pfizer to request similar data on whether it will be necessary to apply additional doses of its vaccine and when that would happen.
