Demonstration in Niterói (RJ) denounces abusive tariffs for

Successive increases in electricity bills prompted a protest this Thursday morning (18th), in front of Enel Distribuidora’s headquarters, in Niterói, in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro.

The symbolic action, organized by the Movement of People Affected by Dams (MAB), denounced the company’s abusive tariff policy, which has mainly affected the low-income population.

According to MAB, Enel Distribuidora in Rio de Janeiro is one of the most expensive for the consumer, with the fourth highest tariff in the country, occupying the 25th position in the national quality ranking of the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) in 2020.

The private company serves 7.6 million consumers, distributed in 66 municipalities in Rio de Janeiro. In the state of Rio alone, the distributor had a profit of more than R$ 20 billion this year. “For Enel, profit. For the people, hunger. The price of light is a robbery. Out Bolsonaro,” said one of the banners stamped at the protest.

“While there are people going hungry, there are foreign companies profiting a lot at the expense of the people with electricity bills. These companies are in line with the policies of the Bolsonaro and Paulo Guedes government, integrated with the government’s policy of death and hunger, which has made the people suffer the consequences”, assesses Silas Evangelista, from the national coordination of the MAB.

O Brazil in fact contacted the company for an official position, but did not get a response until the end of this article.

“Water Scarcity”

The new tariff flag called Water Shortage imposed an extra fee on electricity bills, rising from R$9.49 to R$14.20 for every 100 kilowatt-hours (kWh) consumed.

Silas explains that “the policy of tariff flags is one of the major problems in the price of electricity in Brazil”. He also points out that Aneel has authorized distribution companies to readjust the price of energy based on the false idea of ”water crisis”.

“The banner increases as companies want. The regulatory agency (Aneel) advocates for companies in the electricity sector, in no time for the consumer. This is the pricing policy that, over the years, has increased the electricity bill. This year in particular they dumped the water from the reservoirs and claimed a water crisis that doesn’t actually exist. According to the national operator of the system, the water from the main reservoirs has been thrown away. It’s a profit policy”, he says.

In addition to Niterói, the acts took place simultaneously on this farm (18) in two other cities in the country where Enel operates, in Fortaleza, Ceará, and in São Paulo, the capital. They asked for a review of the increase in the price of electricity, and that the power cut be not allowed for families who are unable to pay, or are in default.

In addition, the protests also demanded compliance with the law that grants the right to automatic access to the Social Electricity Tariff for the low-income population, and the exemption from the electricity tariff for families registered in CadÚnico until the end of the pandemic.
