The municipality of Rio de Janeiro plans to start the application of the third dose of the vaccine against covid-19 in all adults from December. The city awaits the arrival of new doses of the immunizing agent to start boosting non-elderly people.
The expansion was announced by the Ministry of Health on Tuesday (16). In addition to extending the age range of the booster to 18 to 59 years, the agency also reduced the interval for the third dose from six to five months.
“The doses have not yet been delivered to the Ministry and there has been no anticipation of vaccines so far. For that month it is not possible to start. We will try to anticipate it to December, probably, but it depends on the arrival of the vaccines”, said the municipal secretary of Health Daniel Soranz to Globe.
at the request of the newspaper Extra, the statistician Rafael Izbicki, professor at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), in São Paulo, carried out a survey with data from the city of Rio showing the positive effects of the third dose in cases of hospitalization of covid-19 in the city.

According to the study, the numbers show that in recent weeks the average age of hospitalized people dropped from 69 to 59 years. Another sign of the influence of the extra dose is also already reflected in the numbers: each week the proportion of new hospitalizations for coronaviruses among those over 75 years old in relation to younger ones decreases.
The survey carried out by the mathematician used hospitalization data released weekly by the Ministry of Health on the Opendatasus platform, which gathers information from patients with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.
