Talking about our dear Vito Giannotti (15/01/1943 – 24/07/2015), Vitão, six years after his departure, is still difficult. I think it will take a few years to reach a better dimension of Vito’s importance for the organization, for training and, above all, for the ideological dispute of the working class.
I could rescue his trajectory in his homeland, Italy, coming to Brazil and working life. It could make reference to union organization, the construction of the Única dos Trabalhadores (CUT) and the trajectory as a popular educator and trainer in the area of union and popular communication, before and after the constitution of the Piratininga Communication Center (NPC).
However, I will stick to the last great passion of Vitão’s life: the newspaper Brazil in fact. Since the World Social Forum, Vito played a fundamental role in the construction of the newspaper. Enthusiast of popular communication, he knew that the left lacked a means of communication with the populace.
The most elaborate stage of this project that he helped to generate and, without a doubt, of which he was one of the midwives was the tabloid version, freely distributed, which was born in Rio de Janeiro, on May 1, 2013.
From the editorials, to the booms; from font size to number of words per sentence; from the layout to the agenda meetings, Vito’s hand was present in everything the Brazil de Facto RJ was and is.
But it was in the distribution of the newspaper, on the streets, whether in Central do Brasil or Praça Saens Pena that that old man was transformed into a boy.
Vito got up early and left to distribute the newspaper and talk to the people, with the intensity and spirit of a teenager who left home to find a great love.
He knew that building another world involved dialoguing and organizing the working class. And you don’t do that without communicating with this class. Hence Vito’s passion for this popular communication vehicle that the Brazil in fact it became.
Last weekend, I ran into a friend, recently widowed by a close friend. Among other striking speeches in the moments we were together, he said something that kept echoing in my head: “every day, when I look in the mirror, I see the image of several of my comrades who fought against the dictatorship, who fell in combat or in the basements of the military regime. As I look at them I know I have to go on, however difficult it may be. For them and with them I continue to fight for the construction of socialism”.
The existence of Brasil de Fato RJ is the work of many hands. Many of them are still with us, alive and active. Others were taken from us forever.
When I look at myself in the mirror, I see Antônio Neiva, Mário Augusto Jakobiskind, Joaquin Piñero. When I look in the mirror, I see Vito, distributing Brazil in fact at Central do Brasil, happy, and dedicated, grateful for talking to the people, for ideologically disputing the formation of the new man and the new woman.
Let us follow in the footsteps of Vito Giannotti, let us fight the good fight, communicate and organize the working class. We have the duty to go ahead, for him and with him, because Vito’s path has already opened, the direction he has already pointed out.
Vito Giannotti: present, present, present!
