Article | Am I entitled to cheaper energy?

With the Social Tariff, all families with income less than or equal to R$550 per member are entitled to pay less on their electricity bills. Registration in the Cadastro Único is required, which can be done at the nearest Social Assistance Reference Center (CRAS).

Residents who receive the continued benefit benefit are also entitled. In Paraná, discounts range from 10% to 100%, depending on the energy consumed.

According to the Movement of People Affected by Dams (MAB), the big problem is that almost half of Brazilian families with this right still do not have access to it. In Paraná, today, at least two million people could already be paying a lower amount on the electricity bill.

A new law will take effect from January 2022, obliging electricity companies to automatically include families registered in the Cadastro Único in the program. This is a great achievement of popular pressure led by MAB, although we still do not know if the implementation of the law will be enough to solve the great bottleneck in access to cheaper energy.

Until then, in order to be eligible, the current rule remains valid: it is necessary to look for an agency of the Companhia Paranaense de Energia (Copel) and present the social identification number (NIS), as well as a copy of the RG and CPF.
